The ancient Sinhalese are known and revered for their artistic skills and talents which have been discovered in full display in various corners of the island. However, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura appear to be home to most of these, including the Gal Viharaya. Here you’ll find a spectacular collection of Buddha images, all rock carvings. The exquisite details and sheer precision is evident in each of these images which make up a collection of 4, all cut from the one slab of granite. The clever utilisation of natural resources is testimony to the Sinhalese’ talent several hundred years ago. The standing Buddha statue here is probably the most astounding, standing tall at 7m (23ft).
