A location with both architectural and religious significance, the Gangarayama Temple is a key feature in Colombo. It organises an annual ‘perahera’ which you might be able to witness if you’re here for Nawam Poya which falls in February, and as one of the oldest Buddhist temples around, holds a wealth of information and history within its walls. Adorned with intriguing artefacts from all around the world, the temple also has cultural importance, and is an amalgamation of Sri Lanka, India, China and Thailand. It’s also a centre of learning, having produced many scholars over the years. The Bo tree this temple is positioned next to is believed to be a sapling from the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Bo tree under which it’s claimed Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.
