This stupa comes with a gigantic dome that rises awe-inspiringly above the landscape. It’s one of the region’s primary attractions, and was built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century BC. Like the Abhayagiri, it too was revered as an imposing monument in the ancient world, falling short only to the pyramids in Egypt. Today however, it has shrunk in stature, owing to various factors over the years, but even despite this remains the world’s tallest stupa. Encompassing millions of bricks which in itself is astounding, the stupa also offers a vivid history into religion and culture thousands of years ago.
