Though this dagoba has been extensively re-constructed, one can’t help but visualize it as it was once-upon-a-time. Believed to have been the work of King Kavantissa of Ruhunu in 200 BC, the dagoba itself is accompanied by a statue of Queen Viharamahadevi, who is attached to legend and eventually went onto to marry King Kavantissa. Their son King Dutugemunu went onto become one of the island’s foremost heroes for his actions, and is heralded to this day.
