The kings of Sri Lanka were genuinely invested in the well-being of the country, and thus spent their days fending off invaders and developing the island as a whole. Yatala Wehera is yet another work of a king, this time King Mahanga in honour of the birth of his son YatalaTissa. It was built some 2,300 years ago, and is therefore a very ancient historical site. It’s also well secured, with a wall of sculpted elephant heads and a moat surrounding it, which in turn houses lotus ponds bearing intricate elephant carvings.
